Make a selection that gives you some border space around the edge of your image.
Fill the selection with black. Woops! This is the opposite of what you want to see...

Use Ctrl-Shift-A to deactivate the selection, then use the Image > Colors > Invert function to reverse the mask and get the outline you're looking for.
