Now, if you want to get a soft fade into the background, you can simply use Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur several times.

If you want to get more interesting, you can use Filters > Artistic > Cubism, which produces a nice effect as well.

Filters > Distorts > Waves is also nifty.
