We started out trying to develop and use a portable substrate between
ACLWin and MCL but quickly found that MCL's view model could not
translate efficiently to the PC: it consumed too many resources, too
much memory, and was slow. We may have chosen a bad system model for
the substrate, but I believe the strong OO-stream nature of MCL's views
will be difficult to emulate [although we still quasi-emulate them via
much shallower and only partially portable macros.]
