I believe it was David Parnas who said something to the effect that
a well-crafted program will always *look* (a posteriori) like it was
written in one fell swoop out of whole cloth (that is, look like an
a priori design), but in fact it never is.

[Sorry I've forgotten the exact reference, but IIRC it was an article
about growing the documentation & the program together in the face of
changing requirments or something like that...]
