We have been looking into the suptype problem you reported.  We agree
with your analysis.  We have been puzzling about what, if anything, we
can do about it in the short term.  (Unfortunately, the subtype code
is complciated so that a `fix' in one area might cause a problem in
another.) 

Your message implied that the problem was hard to track down but once
discovered is less of a problem?  Is that an accurate assessment?
